About Us
Enterprise Expertise. Business-First Approach.
Layer27 was built by engineers who grew up in enterprise data centers and security consulting. We bring that depth to every business we serve — and we explain it in plain English.
Our Story
Layer27 didn't start in a garage or a dorm room. It started in enterprise data centers — the kind with raised floors, redundant power, and zero tolerance for downtime. Our founders and core team spent years designing, building, and securing critical infrastructure for organizations where technology failures weren't inconveniences — they were existential risks.
We came from the world of enterprise architecture and security consulting: deploying multi-site data center environments, hardening networks against nation-state threats, leading cloud migrations for regulated industries, and building the compliance frameworks that auditors sign off on. That experience gave us something most IT providers don't have — a deep understanding of how technology should work at scale, and the discipline to implement it right the first time.
But we also noticed something: the businesses that needed this expertise the most — the 50-person manufacturer, the growing medical practice, the law firm handling sensitive client data — were the ones least likely to get it. They were stuck with break-fix providers who showed up after things broke, or overwhelmed internal IT staff trying to be a one-person department across security, cloud, networking, and help desk.
So in 2011, we founded Layer27 with a straightforward mission: bring enterprise-grade IT expertise to businesses that deserve it, at a price point that makes sense, and communicate it in a way that actually helps leaders make better decisions.
That last part matters. We believe the best IT partner isn't the one who speaks the most technical language — it's the one who can translate complex technology into clear business outcomes. No geek speak. No jargon walls. Just honest guidance on what your business needs, what it doesn't, and why.
Today, Layer27 serves businesses across the United States with a growing team of engineers who know technology inside and out — but more importantly, know how to connect it to the metrics that keep you up at night: revenue, risk, compliance, and growth. We're not here to sell you technology. We're here to make sure technology is working for your business, not the other way around.
Our Journey
From enterprise data centers to a full-service managed IT, cybersecurity, and cloud practice — here's how we got here.
Founded in the Data Center
2011Layer27 launched in Durham, NC, founded by IT professionals who spent their careers inside enterprise data centers — designing, building, and securing infrastructure for organizations that couldn't afford downtime. We started with a simple conviction: small and mid-sized businesses deserve the same caliber of IT that Fortune 500 companies take for granted.
Cloud Services
2014As businesses started looking beyond on-premises infrastructure, we were already there. Our deep data center roots gave us a unique advantage in cloud architecture — we understood what needed to move, what should stay, and how to make the transition seamless. We launched managed cloud services across Azure, AWS, and private cloud environments, helping clients reduce capital costs while gaining the scalability enterprise workloads demand.
Cybersecurity Practice
2017The threat landscape was changing fast, and businesses that once relied on a firewall and antivirus were getting breached. We formalized our cybersecurity practice — bringing the same rigor we applied to enterprise security consulting to the SMB market. Vulnerability assessments, security hardening, compliance frameworks, and incident response planning became core to every engagement, not an add-on.
Remote-First Support
2020When the world went remote overnight, most IT providers scrambled. We leaned in. Our team rapidly scaled remote support infrastructure, deploying secure remote access, endpoint management, and collaboration platforms for clients who needed to keep operating without missing a beat. This wasn't a pivot — it was an acceleration of the remote-capable support model we'd been building for years.
SOC & Managed Detection & Response
2021Ransomware attacks were surging — 76% of them happening outside business hours, when most SMBs had zero coverage. We launched our 24/7 Security Operations Center and Managed Detection & Response (MDR) service, giving every client access to the same around-the-clock threat monitoring and rapid incident response that enterprises pay millions to build in-house. Real analysts. Real-time containment. Not just alerts — action.
AI-Powered Operations
2024We integrated AI and automation across our service delivery — from intelligent alert triage that cuts through noise to predictive analytics that catch problems before they become outages. Our AI-powered Triage Assistant in Microsoft Teams gives clients instant, intelligent support while routing complex issues to the right specialist in minutes. It's not AI for the sake of AI — it's AI that makes your IT faster, smarter, and more proactive.
National Expansion
2025What started in Durham now serves businesses across the United States. Our remote-first support model, combined with strategic on-site capabilities, means location is no longer a limitation. We're growing our engineering team, deepening our compliance expertise, and continuing to invest in the tools and talent that keep our clients ahead of the curve.
The Team Behind Layer27
We're a growing team of engineers, architects, and security analysts who share a common trait: we know how to make technology work for your business — and explain it so it actually makes sense.
Built Different
Most IT companies hire generalists and train them on the job. We hire engineers who've already done the work — in data centers, in security operations centers, in enterprise cloud environments. They've managed infrastructure for hospitals, financial institutions, and manufacturers where compliance isn't optional and downtime isn't acceptable.
But technical skill is only half the equation. We specifically look for people who can sit across the table from a CEO, a practice manager, or an operations director and explain — in plain language — what's happening, what needs to happen, and what it means for the business. If you've ever felt like your IT provider was speaking a different language, that's the gap we're built to close.
Our team holds certifications across Microsoft, AWS, security, and networking — but what our clients value most is that we listen first, recommend second, and always tie our guidance back to business outcomes: reducing risk, controlling costs, staying compliant, and enabling growth.
Want to Join the Team?
We're always looking for talented engineers who know their way around enterprise infrastructure and can explain what they do without a glossary. If that sounds like you, we'd love to talk.
